The National River Flow Archive comprises over 44,000 station-years of daily river flows and incorporates data from over 1300 gauging stations throughout the United Kingdom. To ensure the data held on the National River Flow Archive are easily accessible a suite of programs has been developed to provide a wide range of standard retrieval options.

All standard retrieval options are designed to allow flexibility in both presentational style and retrieval media. The utility of these retrievals, and more specialised analyses, is enhanced by the availability of complementary reference or spatial information (including other datasets maintained by the National Water Archive) and the manipulative potential provided by modern data handling systems and statistical packages.
The range of retrievals is being continually extended to meet our user requirements. Please contact the National River Flow Archive (see below) to discuss the standard retrievals available and any specialised requirements you may have.
To cover the computing and handling costs, a moderate charge will normally be made depending on the output options selected. Estimates of the charges associated with individual retrievals and the reduction on pro rata costs for large data requests may be obtained on request to the NRFA; the right to levy a minimum handling charge and amend or waive charges is reserved.
Please note: listing or downloading of the data implies acceptance of the following conditions.
In line with Natural Environment Research Council policy, the provision of data from the National River Flow Archive confers only a right to use the data. Ownership of the data, or the associated Intellectual Property Rights, will not normally be transferred. Data received from the NRFA must not be sold, or passed on to any third party. Reproduction is authorised, except for commercial purposes, provided the source is acknowledged.
Through the use of quality control procedures every effort is made to maintain and improve the quality of data. However, NERC, the Environment Agency, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and the Rivers Agency (NI) accepts no liability for any loss or damage, cost or claims arising directly or indirectly from their use.
In collaboration with the measuring authorities considerable effort is devoted to maintaining the quality of nationally archived river flow data. Data submitted to the NRFA are systematically submitted to a sequence of quality control checks. However, the ability of individual gauging stations to provide accurate and representative flows on a sensibly continuous basis, varies greatly from station to station - and, often, through time at the same site. To alert users to any particular hydrometric problems, or substantial disturbances to the natural flow regime, a summary description of the gauging station, its hydrometric characteristics and the catchment it commands is normally provided as part of the NRFA retrieval service.
